A Haverhill headteacher has praised the commitment and dedication of staff, students and parents after Ofsted inspectors rated her primary school as ‘Good’.

Burton End Primary Academy are celebrating after the inspection in January which gave sweeping praise to the school, describing it as “calm and purposeful”.

Pupils were said to be proud of going to Burton End and are happy in their learning and play.

Karen Sheargold, headteacher of Burton End Primary Academy, said she was pleased that the hard work of everyone had been highlighted by the report.

Mrs Sheargold said: “I am delighted that we have received a ‘Good’ rating by Ofsted. This is testimony to everyone’s commitment and dedication.

“We have great support from our parents and school community and the staff and students have worked so hard to get here. They all deserve this success.”

Mrs Sheargold, who joined the school in January 2018, said she was particularly pleased to see literacy highlighted so strongly by Ofsted inspectors with the school opening a new library last year.

The Ofsted report said: “Pupils are happy in their learning and play. They know their teachers want them to do well academically and to be confident
“They describe themselves as ‘bookworms’ and say that ‘reading is awesome’. Pupils say how much they enjoy the Burton End Reading Challenge.”

Teachers were said to have high expectations of pupils’ behaviour and this resulted in good behaviour with ‘play leaders’ looking after younger pupils during breaktimes.

The school’s range of activities and opportunities for pupils was also highlighted along with mathematics which was described as a strength.

After the school was rated as ‘Requires Improvement’ in September 2017, Ofsted inspectors said Burton End had “improved greatly”.

Mrs Sheargold added: “We have certainly been on a journey, but we will continue working hard to ensure we offer the best possible education to our young people.”
