Teaching and Learning Charter

Our Teaching and Learning Charter

Teacher:
"I use my well-developed subject expertise to challenge and inspire students.  I model enthusiasm and a love of learning."

Student:
"We want all teachers to have a love for their subject and know it inside out.  If teachers don’t instantly know the answer we like it when they discuss it with us."

Teacher:
"I constantly reflect on my classroom practice and look for evidenced based solutions to improve my teaching.  I enjoy learning with my fellow teachers."

Student:
"We are motivated by teachers who provide us with new ways of learning.  We want teachers to be learners too."

Teacher:
"I am acutely aware of students’ needs and plan to stretch and challenge all.  I use personal intervention and coaching to impact on learning."

Student:
"Teachers challenge and support us to achieve, and even exceed, our potential."

Teacher:
"I try to make my marking and dialogue with students really helpful to their learning.  I expect pupils to respond to feedback and improve.  I check learning frequently in lessons, to see where I need to intervene."

Student:
"We want regular verbal and written feedback so we know how we are doing.  Teachers should give us time to improve our work based on their feedback."

Teacher:
"I set a positive ethos based on mutual respect and rapport. I believe that all pupils can achieve high standards with hard work. I have high expectations about students’ conduct and commitment and find ways to make learning enjoyable."

Student:
"Teachers create a challenging but safe environment where behaviour is excellent and the school values are reinforced. Teachers always believe in us."

Teacher:
"I provide structures to develop students’ language for discussing learning.  I look for meaningful opportunities to develop SMSC, literacy and numeracy."

Student:
'Teachers provide opportunities for us to express our opinions and talk about how we learn best.  In the classroom all views are valued and listened to."

Teacher:
"I model resilience and reflection in my day-to-day teaching.
I try to get students to reflect on their learning and not give up when they find it difficult."

Student:
"We are encouraged to stick at work when it gets tough and feel safe to make mistakes.  We want mistakes to be valued as this is how we learn."

Teacher:
"I give students chance to show initiative and work together in groups.
I help them to take and develop leadership roles."

Student:
"We are always encouraged to further our own ideas and work in teams to develop collective responsibility, communication skills and resilience."

Teacher:
"I set and share clear objectives and success criteria that will help students make outstanding progress and bridge any gaps in their learning.  I use exemplars to show pupils what success looks like."

Student:
"Teachers are excellent at setting clear and individual targets that make explicit the specific areas for improvement."

Teacher:
'I provide opportunities for students to use higher order thinking and reasoning. I encourage them to ask searching questions and use their imagination to explore possibilities."

Student:
'We would like teachers to help us think about learning more and model creativity in all their teaching.  We can then use this with our ideas to truly love learning."
