Work on a new state-of-the-art library which will transform literacy opportunities in a Suffolk secondary school has begun.
Students and staff at Newmarket Academy will soon be benefitting from the fantastic new library which has been funded by a generous gift from Godolphin founder His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
SEH French has been appointed to lead the construction of the new library which has been designed by Wincer Kievenaar Architects.
They joined headteacher, Nick Froy, chair of governors, Paul Reed, and school students in a special sod-cutting ceremony last week.
Mr Froy said: “We are delighted that the work on the new library is getting underway.
“This building will make a huge difference to our students and staff and also help to enhance the career opportunities of young people in this community.
“Sheikh Mohammed’s continued and considerable contribution to this school will make a significant difference to the lives of every student who attends our Academy.”
Mr Reed added: “This is such an exciting project for Newmarket Academy and for the whole town.
We cannot wait to see it take shape over the coming weeks and months.”
It is believed that this is one of the only times a state-funded school has received funding for any new building from a private individual.
Work is due to be completed late August 2019 with students benefitting from the library from the start of the new school year.
