The Unity Schools Partnership has announced plans to bid for a new special school in Chelmsford.
The school would include 64 places – 15 of which are boarding places – as part of a hub of special provision serving the area.
The school, on the site of the former St Peter’s College in Fox Crescent, will serve pupils aged between seven and 16 years old with complex and severe social, emotional and mental health needs.
The Unity Schools Partnership, formerly the Samuel Ward Academy Trust, already has Churchill Special Free School, which has been rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted inspectors, under its banner.
And it will be further increasing and enhancing its provision after winning bids to build new special schools in Romford and Ipswich over the next few years.
Tim Coulson, Chief Executive of the Unity Schools Partnership, said: “We are committed to developing high quality provision with pupils at the centre of everything we do.
“Our outstanding team is dedicated to providing the very best opportunities for the pupils attending our special schools and we are very excited about this opportunity to bid to open a special school in Chelmsford.”
The Unity Schools Partnership is now looking to hear the views of parents, students, community groups and any other interested parties.
Mr Coulson added: “We want to know what the local community think of our plans, what you want for SEND children and how you want to be kept involved if our bid is approved.”
