Exciting plans to rename and reinvigorate sixth form education in Haverhill have been unveiled by Samuel Ward Academy Trust.
From September, the Haverhill Community Sixth Form will be the new offering for further education students in the town and surrounding areas.
Alongside a new identity, the sixth form centre, which will remain on the site of Samuel Ward Academy, will also benefit from a wide range of new social and study areas and a coffee shop – following a consultation exercise with students.
Tim Coulson, chief executive of Samuel Ward Academy Trust, said the move underlined their commitment to sixth form provision in Haverhill – while senior staff at Samuel Ward and Castle Manor Academy also welcomed the move.
Kevin Geall, head of sixth form at Samuel Ward, said: “We wanted students to be part of the decision-making process so we talked to them about what they wanted from a sixth form as well as consulting with them over the name and brand.
“We also took students to see the sixth form offering at Thomas Gainsborough School in Great Cornard.
“It was about making sure we had the right provision for students in and around Haverhill, regardless of their needs. To see the plans come to life is very exciting.”
Vanessa Whitcombe, headteacher at Castle Manor Academy, said: “This is great news for students at both Castle Manor and Samuel Ward.
“Our students have enjoyed being involved in visioning for the new identity, which will provide a local, joined up high quality offer for post 16 provision.”
Mr Coulson added: “These plans are very exciting for staff and students alike. We have heard the concerns and met with interested parties over post-16 education in the town.
“Our message is that we are very much committed to sixth form provision across Haverhill and the surrounding areas and we welcome the opportunity to discuss these plans with the local community.”
An open meeting with parents to discuss the new sixth form offering will be held at Samuel Ward Academy on Wednesday 27th June between 6pm and 8pm.
